Online church is an effective way to learn more about God, find life and meaning, grow in your faith, develop your hope in Jesus and connect with like-minded people from all over the world in a safe environment on any device or operating system.

What is an online church?

An online church can be a great alternative to traditional churches for many reasons, but it doesn't need to take the place of your local congregation either.

Online church, like in-person church, really exists to help you learn more about God through the work of Jesus. They exist to help you grow in your understanding and knowledge of God, to bring you closer to Him.

So online churches are communities of people - just like you - who meet online to learn about Jesus. Church online usually includes all the elements that you would expect to find in a local church. Many churches stream their service so you can watch and join in with the service (often on Facebook or YouTube), which will have some kind of sermon as well as worship songs that can be viewed from any computer or mobile device in real-time. Online churches also create communities using video calling software (like Zoom for example), chat rooms, forums, blogs and so on.

How is Crowd Church different to other online churches?

One of the things that we noticed about many online church services is that they broadcast their in-person church meeting. We wanted to do something much more personal than that, we didn't want it to feel like you were watching a conference. So we are a dedicated online church, and the way we do our service is much more geared towards the online community, no matter where you are in your faith journey.

Our church live stream

Crowd Church is a non-denominational church and our commitment is not just to believers but also for those that might not see the point of church. Our commitment is to those that worship and those that are looking for answers to their questions. Our Sunday live stream normally lasts about an hour. We do have an online church sermon, and it usually lasts about 15-20 minutes. Each talk is based around an important question that we are looking to answer, questions like "Are all Christians hypocrites?", "How do I pray?", "What do you think about to get you through the dark times?", "How to deal with injustice?", "How to deal with difficult people?", "How does Jesus deal with prejudice?" and "Is Jesus sexist?"

After the talk, we have a time of worship and reflection (check out our worship playlist on YouTube).

We know church is not just about flashy Sunday Sermons or edgy worship but it is about relationships, about doing life together getting involved and having your say. So the second part of the service is devoted to a conversation around the sermon.

We call this Conversation Street.

Each service usually has two hosts that chat through any questions or comments that have come up during the service and talk. This is a great way for you to contribute, to get involved and it is a safe space to bring your questions. There is always plenty of laughter and banter too as we look at how the Bible answers your questions. We don't know everything, but we do know that Jesus is amazing and has the truths that we need to live a meaningful life.

Our online communities

As well as the church live stream, like most churches, we have online communities that have a desire to grow closer to God. Each week we look at the bible and then share our thoughts with each other about what has been learnt. The conversations are often deep, full of hope, thought-provoking and challenging - that's because it's a safe space to really sharpen each other. We ask questions and brings ideas about Christ, the Christian faith and meaning. We also spend time praying for each other too, so as a result, our community groups are a great way to really connect with folks, make new friends and build relationships.

Why attend an online church service?

Online church is a great way to connect with like-minded people from all over the world. Online churches are also more flexible than traditional services; you can attend at any time that suits you and it doesn't take up your entire Sunday day. You don't have to be in a specific location every Sunday, as long as you have an internet signal you are good to go.

We know many people attend online church because of work or shift patterns making it difficult to attend in-person church, or there may be some medical reason that folks can't get out of the house.

Whatever your reason, online church can be a lifeline for believers and a great way to connect with God and learn more about Him. And it's not just for the believers too. Online church provides a safe space for everyone, regardless of ethnicity or religion to come with their questions. It doesn't matter where you are in your faith journey in Jesus Christ, as it is a great way to investigate the Christian faith and find out more about life and get support.

At Crowd Church we also love to give folks an opportunity for prayer. All of us need prayer at different times, and the great thing about attending church is that we have a prayer team that would love to pray for you. You don't have to be a believer to request prayer, you just have to ask for it.

Want prayer? A great way to get started is to message us via WhatsApp. Let us know how we can support you in prayer. We will listen and begin to pray. We know that prayer changes lives as heaven hears us when we pray. It's an amazing thing that makes us very blessed indeed.

If you are attending a church service online, then how do you make the most of your experience? How do you get involved?

  • Engage in the Livestream. We know that many people come to an online church service anonymously (it's the beauty of the Internet). But as and when you are ready - start to engage in the live stream comments. Say "Hi", let people know where you are in the world. Ask questions about the talk or even offer your own thoughts into the conversation. Many churches also give you a facility to ask for prayer, so if you have any needs or prayer requests, ask people to pray for you.

  • Get involved with the community. Each church will have some kind of community group, so if you feel like you are enjoying the church online services, why not take the step and join a community group. Find a group that resonates with you, a place you feel safe, a place you can be yourself, a place where you can ask your questions, enjoy Bible study, build your faith and find prayer.

  • Find ways to serve. Churches work because of the people that go to them. Every church needs people to get involved, to engage, to be part of a community group but also to serve. What are your skills? What gifts has God given you that could benefit the church? And it doesn't just have to be serving on Kids work too. You can serve in many ways, especially with an online church. Get in touch with the church and see where they need help.

Some of the biggest online churches

Crowd Church is a pretty small church compared to some of the online churches out there. Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better 😉, but they are definitely worth checking out as they do an awesome job of being church.

Questions Folks Have Regarding Attending a Virtual Church

Do many people engage with the online church?

Oh yes! It's an almost impossible number to measure. There are more than 17,000 online services being broadcast just from Church of England churches every week. We know that during the COVID pandemic, almost half of the churches were reporting that attendance grew significantly. And of course, people watch the online church live streams with other people, such as families watching together. There are millions of people around the world engaging with the church online. Why? Because the church has the message of the gospel, the good news of Christ: a message of hope and of love, a message of forgiveness and grace, a message of destiny and celebration, a message of truth and mission. No wonder people want to hear about it.

Why are there online churches?

As mentioned above, online church is growing in popularity for a number of reasons from convenience, ease of access, the ability to join in and contribute to the conversation. The bottom line is the church doesn’t exist just for believers but to help people from all over the world, from all walks of life, understand the mystery of Christ, bring the hope of Jesus to a hurting world and grow in our relationship with God. This can be done online and also in person.

Does online church work for kids?

The answer depends on the church. There are now a lot of online churches that have stuff for kids and families to connect with, and it's pretty cool as kids have a lot to offer the church. At Crowd Church, we are developing our kids work (we are still a pretty new church), and if this is something that you would like to get involved with (as a person or as a family) then do reach out to us and let us know.

Can we watch online church as a family?

Yes, many families do watch the online services together. Online church is great as you can connect with others all over the world and worship God from your home in a way that fits into your family's schedule. We've found that online church is a great conversation starter for the dinner table too, so your family can talk about Jesus as well as eat food at the same time (it's the perfect combination).

What if I can’t make the live stream?

We appreciate that for many folks, even with church being online it is not always convenient or possible to join in with the live stream, especially if you have work or family commitments. That's OK - the good news about streaming using services like Facebook Live and YouTube Live is that you can catch up at any time. The great thing about joining in with the live stream is the ability to ask questions and contribute to the service as it is happening, so we would recommend getting involved with an online church that you can join in with as they go live, but we also know that sometimes life gets in the way a little.

Do I need to be invited to join in?

There are some online services that are done over Zoom, in which case you'll need to contact the church to get the Zoom link. We use Zoom for our community groups, so if you are interested in joining in - you'll need the link (we're happy to send it to you, just reach out). Most of the online services, though, are broadcast on platforms that don't require you to log in, such as Facebook Live or YouTube Live or even directly on the church's website, so you shouldn't need an invite for the majority of online church services. You definitely don't need an invite for the Crowd Church stream, you can just join in.

Do I need to download a mobile app to watch the church service?

Most of the time, the answer will be no - especially if the church is using Facebook or YouTube. There are churches with specific mobile apps though, and if your church has one it would be worth downloading it to get a better experience. At the moment, Crowd Church doesn't have a mobile app, but you can watch the live stream on your mobile device still.

What is worship like in an online church?

The purpose of worship is to remember the goodness of God and the work of Jesus. Worship glorifies God, worship brings into His presence and brings life to your soul. How churches do that will vary between churches. More traditional churches will have different worship to a more charismatic non-denominational type church so find a church that has a worship style you can enjoy. At Crowd Church we keep worship pretty stripped back, but it is all about Jesus Christ. The lyrics to the music will be on the screen and are easy to read. For those that are new to church and are not used to worship, we invite you to think about the words as the music plays, to reflect on them as they talk about hope in Jesus and to join in if and when you are ready.

Is online church for everyone?

The answer to this question is no, it isn't. There isn't a single church that is for everyone. Online church is not the be-all and end-all of churches. The online church can't offer you a hug or in-person help - this would all need to happen through Skype for example. The online church has its limits but it is a valid form of church that will work for many people - especially those who are wanting to explore the Christian faith. Online church, like in-person church, is a place where the people will listen to you, where relationships are formed, where kids can engage, where families to do church together, where you can feel supported and encouraged, where you can bring your great questions and above all, find hope and grow in your faith and understanding of God.

Online church might not be right for everyone, but we invite you to try it. If you haven’t found a church yet, or if you are looking at the Christian, we would love to welcome you into the Crowd Church family. Here you will find friends and belonging.
